Grading Info

If you do not wish to grade, you are still welcome to attend but you must observe grading etiquette at all times.

The Fee is £10 per student and there is no additional fee for belts or tags. Unlike many martial arts the grading fee remains the same all the way up until Brown Belt and only changes for the Black Belt grading which will last slightly longer.

Belts and tags will be given out at the following weeks session which, for our juniors, is usually a games session as a reward for hard work in preparation and during the gradings.

A printable copy of the syllabus can be found above and in the SJA record book which you receive upon becoming a member. To aid grading preparation further, if you click on the coloured belts then there are pictures, illustrations or a short video for each of the techniques on the syllabus.

The free App called Judo Reference available via Google Play is very useful in learning techniques and their names. The techniques for each belt is different to our syllabus but you can add the ones you need to know to your favourites and then you will only be viewing the ones applicable.

Please remember to bring your SJA License record book to the grading as those without a valid License will be refused entry to grade.

Information on the SJA license can be found on the SJA Information page or click: License.

To be eligible to grade all Judoka need tournament experience. Grading and Competitions are not separate entities but are an important part of a judokas development. All Judoka up to Green belts must complete a minimum of two Competitions and Green belt and above must undertake three competitions each year. This does not apply to new members and concessions will be made for those with good reason.

Annual Competition fixtures can be found on the Calendar on our Home page

If you wish to know more about how grades are assessed and what preparation is needed then please feel free to contact to a club coach who will be happy to offer some guidance.
